Summary
Activity Description:
Urinary tract infections are a common disease state encountered in the small animal veterinary clinic. Pharmacists can be a valuable resource to their local veterinarians by assisting in antimicrobial selection. This includes assistance with empiric therapy and drug selection based on culture and sensitivity reports. This presentation will review the International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Diseases (ISCAID)’s recently updated guidelines on the treatment of bacterial urinary tract infections in canines and felines. After this lecture, pharmacists should feel well prepared to help limit the overuse of antibiotics in the veterinary realm.
Pharmacist & Pharmacy Technician Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss the veterinary professional's role in limiting the overuse of antibiotics and the importance of being an antimicrobial steward
2. Identify common bacterial urinary tract infections that occur in the small animal setting
3. Discuss appropriate antibiotic therapy regimens for treating urinary tract infections using evidence-based recommendations and guideline updates
4. Briefly review the interpretation of culture and sensitivity reports
